Excel file in weird format

December 5, 2008

Did you ever get an Excel, .XLS, file in a weird format? Something like this:

%PDF-1.4
% ¦Š’
4 0 obj
<</Type/XObject
/Subtype/Image
/Width 1656
/Height 2339
/BitsPerComponent 1
/ColorSpace/DeviceGray
/Filter /CCITTFaxDecode
/DecodeParms <</Columns 1656 /Rows 2339>>
/Length 68298
>>

The reason is most likely that it is not an Excel file — it’s a PDF file named XLS! Rename the file to .PDF instead, open it in Adobe Reader or a similar PDF reader, and, hey presto, there you go.
